Seattle expected to rise from recession
KIRO Radio
If you're out of work or expecting a layoff, there's some good news. Seattle is expected to be one of the first metro areas to bounce back from the recession.
Forbes Magazine ranks Seattle 17th in a list of 25 cities to come out of the recession on top. First place goes to Raleigh, North Carolina.
"One of the best things Seattle has going for it is its high level of human capital and very highly educated labor supply. [It's] one of the smartest work forces in the country," said Kurt Badenhausen, who helped research Forbes latest survey on the best cities for business. He says Seattle is expected to add jobs in 2010 and 2011.
Health care, a high-tech, and renewable energy are all growth industries, and they all have a strong presence here in Seattle.
Badenhausen says the only thing holding Seattle back is the high cost of living and the high cost of doing business.
Olympia ranks 23rd on the list.
Forbes lists the area's best big businesses: Amazon.com, Costco, Esterline Technologies, Expeditors Intl, and Microsoft. The best small businesses: Blue Nile and Zumiez. Forbes adds Seattle ranked first in its Top 30 Most-Wired American Cities 2009 list and sixth on Best Cities for Singles 2008.
