Why did Fonzie jump the shark, and when did Obama do it?

fonzie jumps the shark2

"Jump the shark" is now a phrase synonymous with TV shows that have overstayed their welcome, and it has spread beyond TV to celebrities (for example, Tom Cruise may have "Jumped the shark" when he jumped on Oprah's couch), musicians, movies, book series, etc. A group of friends talking about the moment their favorite shows began inevitable declines, happened upon the term after citing the moment Happy Days quit being so happy for them. It was the day that Fonzie jumped a shark in shorts and a leather jacket. (As a kid I remember I loved the episode and feared Fonzie may have met his match.) A website was started and now millions share their views on when a show has "jumped shark."

Now, daring to stand up in public and lay claim to the infamous episode, is Fred Fox Jr., writer of "Hollywood 3" the episodes in which Fonzie came to Hollywood, water skied in his leather jacket, and jumped a shark. He valiantly defends the episode in today's L.A. Times, but he seems to be surrendered to the idea that regardless of how he struggles, the phrase, and it's meaning, are here to stay.

It's a fun read.

For discussion, when do you think the moment was when President Obama "jumped shark" with the American people?

FIGHT at the US Open...

Producer Jake says: I wish we could hear what they were saying to each other so I could decide the guilty party. The young guy runs his mouth too much but that woman and her father should have just stopped getting in his face. Who do you think is in the wrong here?

Rossi in the lead

The latest Rasmussen poll has Rossi leading Murray by 2 points. Oddly, this has occurred without "coaching"... anyway, the poll also showed Obama's approval rating here below 50% at 48%.

Beck's AA language a problem?

Competing with Morning Joe for Liberals Favorite Conservative title, Kathleen Parker's latest column takes issue with Glenn Beck's use of recovery language out of the AA playbook. "Addictions", "inner demons", "admitting you have a problem", words and phrases that Parker says show Beck's mindset has been forged through the lens of his own recovery.

Parker writes, "For Beck, addiction has been a defining part of his life, and recovery is a process inseparable from The Glenn Beck Show."

I say so what?

I grew up familiar with the language of AA and recovery. I attended meetings and heard the familiar phrases. I heard the stories of those who had ruined their lives and the lives of their families, and I heard them try to rise up out of the aftermath and live with the permanent consequences of their behaviors. So I recognized the recovery aspects of Beck's language the first time I heard his show.

Parker seems to think it reveals something about a weakness within Beck.

I don't.

I think it reveals a strength.

Whether you agree with him or not, Beck has been to the bottom, shamed himself, treated others with shabby cruelty, worshipped at the alter of his own desires for escape and booze.

But he stopped. It's easy for people once in the pit to stay there, to wallow. Beck climbed out. And after climbing out, he sought a new life. Faith gave him a new perspective, but undoubtedly it revealed to him in the bright sunlight, his own flaws. But instead of surrendering to those flaws, he overcame them. He challenged himself and others to be better and do better. All men fall. Not all men get back up. And rebuilding your reputation, your character, your self-respect is no easy task. Beck's appeal may be because so many others have let themselves down and found trouble getting back up. If so, good for him and them. Redemption is something to celebrate (remember the Prodigal Son?).

Perhaps Ms. Parker should talk to Beck about it. Her next partner may need some assistance in that area....

American Taliban says he has the right to a bigger cell

NWCN reports American Taliban John Walker Lindh is demanding a bigger cell and playtime, er, I mean prayertime, with friends... and the ACLU is working on his request. It turns out, in prison the cells aren't so big so when you kneel on the floor, you're close to your toilet, and that's a no-no for Taliban prayers. So they're looking for a U.S. Constitutional right to a cell with a nicer toilet, among other things.

What would the Founders say?

My guess is that they would say nothing. Mr. Lindh would probably have faced a more severe punishment and prison would not be a problem.....

Acid Attack in Vancouver WA

A young woman was attacked with a cup of acid in Vancouver Washington. The 28 year old victim said she was approached by a young African-American woman with slicked back hair who asked, "Hey pretty girl, do you want a drink of this?" and then threw the acid in her face. Luckily, she was wearing sunglasses. There is no motive yet. Here's the video from KGW.com that shows the scars of the victim and what she's up against...

The attempt at mutilation is a particularly gruesome and horrifying aspect of the crime. It made me think of what women suffer with some regularity in other parts of the world. A brief search of YouTube reveals the horrors women have been subjected to....

Reminder: Meet me at Chambers Bay Golf Course for Dessert

On September 7th at 7pm, I'll be speaking at the Chambers Bay Golf Course for my brother-in-law, Steve O'Ban. For information, email thomas.c.oban@gmail.com or call 253-579-5758). I hope to meet a lot of you there. You'll meet fellow conservatives at a fantastic location, support a great candidate, AND have a great time!

AND FOR THE LIBERALS: if you LIKE the direction the DEMOCRATS are taking the state, and WANT that direction to continue, you should find an event with incumbent Representative Troy Kelly instead. I didn't see any particular events scheduled, but his website has contact information.

President Obama and the Iraq speech

President Obama's speech on Iraq tonight will air on my show at 5pm. What do you expect from the speech? What would you like to hear the president say?

Judging from Robert Gibbs on Fox, it's doubtful that the president will spend too much time trying to reduce the partisan division on the war and give President Bush credit for holding fast... (hat tip HOTAIR)

which is sad, because the war is an American endeavor, not a partisan endeavor. As can be seen from the clip above, Obama the candidate was wrong on Iraq, and essentially followed Bush's lead. While I don't expect him to say that (what politician would?), it'd be nice if he could avoid blame shifting or "credit seeking" and focus instead on the American aspect of the endeavor and the determination and sacrifice of the men and women engaged in the conflict that enabled this level of progress. Less about him, more about them...
